Catalytic converters now fitted in all new cars contain about 2g of metals that have catalytic properties. These metals transform the noxious emissions produced by the engine into less harmful ones. The Draft Directive on End of Life Vehicles (ELV) aspires to meet recovery and recycling targets of:

85% reuse/recovery by 2006

95% reuse/recovery by 2015

Automotive electronics: complex electronic components such as anti-lock braking modules, oxygen-sensors and motor controls contain valuable materials that can be recycled.
